So What Are "Sustainability Issues" Anyway? |

Cities have always been bustling
centers of commerce, government, culture, and other human activity.
When needing a break from their hectic routines, however, city dwellers
have long enjoyed the notion of "getting away from it all,"
travelling to parks and other natural areas outside the reach of urban
civilization.
Now, however, these two
ideas are on a collision course with each other. "Urban Sprawl"
is making their way into nearly every American's daily routine in the
form of uninspired neighborhoods and longer daily commutes. Despite
the lessons learned from Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Denver, more and
more metropolitan areas are finding themselves faced with yet another
concentric circle of development, and their accompanying problems of
Sustainability.
And "getting away
from it all" has also never been more difficult. America's wilderness
areas are under unprecedented assault from visitors, developers, and
others. Every attempt to award a new area with wilderness designation
is met with a firestorm of debate from environmentalists and "wise
use" advocates.
In the cities, though,
ideas of "New Urbanism" and "Smart Growth" are at
least starting to make their ways into mainstream thinking. Combining
that with smarter energy use, waste management, and transportation choices,
and city life could still be an attractive option.
