So What Are "Sustainability Issues" Anyway? |

Energy
Energy has to be one of the Earth's
most significant and far-reaching Sustainability issues.
Indeed, it has been an issue ever since the earliest humans (only a
few thousand of them, scattered around the globe) began burning wood
to stay warm.
The Industrial Revolution of the mid-19th
century made most of the world switch to coal for its primary energy
source. And the prosperity of the 20th century allowed more & more
people in the developed world to drive cars that burn petroleum (crude
oil).
Despite their still-widespread availability
and low cost, the continued burning of these fossil fuels are causing
siginficant damage to the health of our planet, on both "micro"
(with individual cases of lung disease on the rise) and "macro"
(global warming) levels. And even though these sources will eventually
be exhausted (or at least no longer be economically viable), America
and much of the developing world continues to burn them as if the supply
is limitless.
Corporate America has touted the "virtues"
of Natural Gas and Nuclear Power, but these would be short-term fixes
at best. And each of these non-renewable sources have their own inherent
dangers, with price fluctuations, wasteful extraction processes, and
safety.
Fortunately, though, the past few decades
have seen significant technological developments in renewable- and distributed-energy
technologies (sun, wind, geothermal, biomass, hydrogen, microturbines,
etc.), and in energy efficiency. Once these resources become as affordable
as fossil fuels (and some would argue that this has already occurred),
the obvious advantages of using renewable, distributed, and efficient
energy should finally become the rule instead of the the exception.
If your Sustainability
issue is in need of "a message to help clear the air," then

make this happen.
