CU-Boulder Student Team Win's
US Department of Energy's
First-Ever "Solar Decathlon"

October 5, 2002

A team of students from the University of Colorado at Boulder has won the Department of Energy's first-ever "Solar Decathlon."

A multi-disciplinary team of engineering, architecture, and other CU-Boulder students worked together for over a year, designing and building a house whose entire energy needs were met by solar energy.

Once their house was built, they had to disassemble it, transport it to Washington, DC, and reassemble it on the National Mall. Once all of the solar houses were assembled, they attracted over 100,000 visitors to the Solar Decathlon competition.

The CU-Boulder team competed against fourteen other universities from across the country, designing a solar-powered house that was judged on ten different criteria:

  • Design and Livability
  • Design Presentation and Simulation
  • * Graphics and Communications
  • * Comfort Zone
  • Refrigeration
  • Hot Water
  • * Energy Balance
  • Lighting
  • Home Business
  • Getting Around

    * The CU-Boulder Team placed first in these individual events.

PvH Communications is proud to have been a contributor to the CU-Boulder Solar Decathlon team.
